LIVERPOOL'S FAB SIX WITHOUT A LEAGUE TITLE

-

STEVEN GERRARD

Liverpool career: 1998-2015 504 120

PL GAMES GOALS Major honours: FA Cup (2); League Cup (3); CL (1).

After the ‘miracle of Istanbul’ in 2005 and after saying, ‘how can I leave after this?’ he almost went to Chelsea. Gerrard joined the youth team when he was nine. For the attacking midfielder, appointed captain at the age of 23, 2013-14 was a great season and looked like Liverpool’s Premiership title wait would end till against Chelsea, Gerrard slipped.

LUIS SUAREZ

2011-14 110 69

PL GAMES GOALS Major honours: League Cup (1)

Joining in January 2011, he left by 2014 but in that time he would tear into defences -- not always figuratively. He and the club often didn’t get along well and Suarez didn’t help matter by biting Branislav Ivanovic and racially abusing Patrice Evra, both infractions earning lengthy bans. But there were many games he won on his own.

XABI ALONSO

2004-09 143 15

PL GAMES GOALS

Major honours: FA Cup (1), Champions League (1). Such was his accuracy that he once scored from 70 yards and it wasn’t the only time this midfielder would net from his own half in a Liverpool shirt. The Spaniard arrived when Rafa Benitez took charge and impressed with his passing ability and free-kicks.

MICHAEL OWEN

1996-2004 216 118

PL GAMES GOALS

Major honours: FA Cup (1), League Cup (2); UEFA Cup (1). He was an Everton fan but having joined the youth academy of a club in the red half of the city as a pre-teen, he stayed. When he scored in his first-team debut, he was just 17. He won the Balon d’Or, then given to Europe’s best player, and in 2001-02, it seemed Liverpool would end their league drought riding on Owen’s goals.

ROBBIE FOWLER

1993-2001; 2006-07 266 128

PL GAMES GOALS

Major honours: FA Cup (1); UEFA Cup (1). League Cup (2). Toxteth may be infamous for the riots of 1981 but it is in this inner-city area of Liverpool one of their most prolific goalscorers was born. As an 18-year-old he once scored five goals against Fulham. At Anfield, they called him God.

JAMIE CARRAGHER

1996-2013 508 3

PL GAMES GOALS

Major honours: FA Cup (2); League Cup (3); Champions League (1); League Cup (1). Rafa Benitez converted him from a full back to centre-back but he could also play defensive midfielder.

Liverpool’s vice-captain for 10 years, he played 150 games in European competitions, a club record.
