Assailants kill 2 cops on patrol duty in Sonepat

ROHTAK: A team of Sonepat police shot dead a criminal and arrested his accomplice during a shootout at Ramnagar on the Jind-Rohtak road on Tuesday. The duo was on the run after killing two cops on patrol duty near Butana checkpost in Sonepat on Monday night.

“Amit Kumar and Sandeep Kumar, hailing from Jind, opened fire at our team during a raid at a house. In the shootout, Amit was killed, while Sandeep was injured. The latter is undergoing treatment at the civil hospital,” said Jind DIG Ashwin Shenvi. Five cops, including two inspectors Prashant and Anil, were also injured in the crossfire. Both the inspectors have been rushed to the PGIMS, Rohtak, added Shenvi.

Earlier, director general of police Manoj Yadava visited the Butana checkpost where special police officer (SPO) Kaptan Singh and constable Ravinder

Kumar were killed.

The DGP, who was accompanie­d by Sonepat SP Jashandeep Randhawa, told reporters that the policemen were patrolling the area near the checkpost when they were attacked.

“Our men were brutally killed. We have sent their bodies for autopsy”, the DGP added. The bodies were first spotted by a morning-walker.

“Both the cops were on duty. We will compensate their families as per the government guidelines. We are investigat­ing whether any gang was involved behind their murder or not,” Yadava added. In the last 48 hours, five persons, including two policemen, have been murdered in Sonepat.
