CHANDIGARH: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national president JP Nadda on Wednesday told party workers in Punjab to reach out to every village in the state to make the saffron party the number 1 among Punjabis.

Delivering the first Kamal Sharma Memorial lecture on “Farmer’s Welfare: Modi Government’s Priority” through videoconference, Nadda said, “Political parties are using farmers to meet their goals and agendas. Farmer’s welfare is not their goal. Party workers must personally reach out to agitating farmers and tell them the real story.” Sharma was a former state BJP president and had passed away last year due to a heart attack.

“I am not talking only about Punjab and Haryana. I am referring to the whole country. Those who have established themselves in politics by using farmers have only paid lip-service to the welfare of this community,” said Nadda.

He also launched an assault on chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh, daring him to show the political honesty to admit that these reforms were promised in the Congress manifesto for 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

“The Congress had mentioned in the manifesto that the age-old Essential Services Commodity Act, 1955 should be replaced. Haven’t you promised that farmers should get freedom from selling their crop inside mandis only? Haven’t you written in the manifesto that contract farming will be made more effective. Now, when the Modi government has done it, you are opposing it only because Modi has done this. Is this your way of thinking?” said Nadda.

“If you have the guts, show political honesty and tell people that these promises were wrongly made in the Congress manifesto. Tell people that you cheated them, when you fought the Lok Sabha polls. Had hai! Chit vi meri aur pat bhi meri (Its more than enough. Your style is that heads I win, tails you lose,” he claimed.

Nadda alleged Congress leaders were standing against the welfare of farmers just to oppose Modi. “Where do you want to push Punjab by doing all this?” asked Nadda.

Nadda added such was the plight of farmers in Punjab that they were bound to sell their crop in nearby mandis and did not even have the option to change their arhitya (commission agent).

“Modi’s farm reforms have freed farmers from all these clutches. These are historic laws,” claimed the BJP national president.
