AMRITSAR Punjab Congress president Sunil Jakhar on Wednesday said that the Centre was conspiring to make farmers landless.

“The three black laws are not only against the Punjab farmers, but are dangerous for the peasantry of the entire country. With these laws, a new danger has emerged for the agrarian states like Punjab. A conspiracy is being hatched to steal and give the land of the farmers to the corporate tycoons. But, we will not tolerate this,” said Jakhar, who was addressing a rally of party workers in Ajnala, organised by Congress MLA Harpartap Singh Ajnala.

Jakhar said the central government has been imposing restrictions on Punjab like the USA has been doing for its rival countries. He said the Centre has been trying hard to make the state financially bankrupt. “But we are with the farmers. This agitation will go long and the Punjabis should be ready for it. We don’t care about our chairs, but the concerns of the people of Punjab are our priorities.”

He said Prime Minister Narendra Modi should meet the farmers and assure the minimum support price (MSP) in written to end the deadlock with the farmers. Lashing out at the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), Jakhar said its leaders have betrayed the farmers of Punjab. He said SAD leaders had first supported the three black laws in Parliament.

He said the BJP-led central government has always meted out step-motherly treatment to Punjab.
