CHANDIGARH : Punjab technical education minister Chranjit Singh Channi’s brother Sukhwant Singh Sukha and wives of Congress’ Moga MLA Harjot Kamal Singh and senior BJP leader Tikshan Sud were among the kin of prominent faces who lost in the civic body polls the results for which were declared on Wednesday.

Channi’s brother Sukhwant faced defeat from a ward in the Kharar municipal council by 12 votes by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate. However, one of Channi’s nephews managed to win from another ward of the civic body of which the minister

served as president before becoming MLA from the Chamkaur Sahib constituency.

MLA Harjot Kamal’s wife Rajinder Kaur lost to Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) candidate Harwinder Kaur Gill by a margin of 151 votes from ward number 1 of the Moga municipal corporation. The MLA said, “We accept the people’s mandate. We will do more hard work in those places where we lost. Our overall performance has improved.”

Former BJP minister Tikshan Sud’s wife Rakesh Sud, a sitting councillor, faced defeat at the hands of Congress candidate Meena Kumari by 274 votes from ward number 5 of Hoshiarpur. Industries minister Sunder Sham Arora left nothing to chance to ensure her defeat, it is learnt.

Last time, Rakesh, also vice president of the BJP’s district unit, had won from ward no 7 which was reserved for SC women candidates.

However, in the Batala municipal corporation, former minister Ashwani Sekhri’s sister Naveen Sekhri won from ward number 34. Her candidature was announced at the last minute as a section of the Congress was opposing her.
