AGRA: Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav on Friday assured agitating farmers that his party was with them and said the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had failed to assess their power.

Yadav was speaking at a kisan mahapanchayat in the Tappal area of Aligarh.

“Farmers play an important role by providing food to all. They are fighting for real issues and would not withdraw (their stir) till three black laws are taken back (a reference to the Centre’s three new farm laws). The Samajwadi Party is with the farmers and will support their agitation, which is entering the 100th day,” the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister said in his 45-minute speech.

“Even during the Covid-19 lockdown, it was the farmer who was out in his fields so that citizens could have food. In a way, farmers saved the nation by producing crops for the common man’s survival,” he said.

“The BJP has, in fact, insulted the farmers by adopting various measures to stop them. The BJP has failed to assess the power of farmers, who have the potential to change governments ruling

the state and at the Centre. Fake cases are being lodged against farmers. The SP workers are with the farmers and will not allow BJP to make the farmers face losses,” he warned.

“The Prime Minister claimed in Parliament that MSP (Minimum Support Price) was there, is there and will continue to be there in the future also. Let the ministers in Delhi and Lucknow say where MSP is (being implemented). While farmers were asking about MSP, the PM and the CM were telling the nation about profits in growing

strawberries,” he said.

“How can the nation become Vishwa Guru (world leader) without the well-being of farmers?” he asked.

“The BJP claims that farmers are not able to understand farm laws. I ask BJP men as to how many of them have done farming,” the former UP chief minister said.

The Samajwadi Party president attacked the Central and state governments on fuel price rise, demonetisation, the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and unemployment.
