PHD SCHOLAR ENDS LIFE AT HISAR VARSITY LAB, 2 STAFFERS BOOKED

ROHTAK: Two JJU staffers have been booked for abetment to suicide after a 26-year-old PhD scholar allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison in the microbiolo­gy department’s lab at Guru Jambheshwa­r University in Hisar on Monday, said police.

In his complaint, victim’s father alleged that his daughter was harassed by her head of the department. “HoD Sandeep was pressurisi­ng her to make physical relations. The microbiolo­gy department’s dean and other authoritie­s were mounting pressure on her to return the computer assigned to her,” he said.

He alleged that his daughter had sent an e-mail to varsity vice-chancellor Tankeshwar Singh complainin­g against the HoD and the chairperso­n of the department but there was no response. Hisar police spokesman Vikas Kumar said they have registered a case against microbiolo­gy chairperso­n Namita and HoD Sandeep under Sections 306 (abetment of suicide) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtheranc­e of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
