Al-Badr militant killed in Budgam encounter

SRINAGAR: An Al-Badr militant was killed in an encounter at Central Kashmir’s Budgam district on Saturday while another militant who had escaped from the cordon was arrested at Khrew.

Police said on a specific informatio­n about presence of militants in Mochwa Chadoora area of Budgam, a joint cordon and search operation was launched by police, 50 Rashtriya Rifles and 181 BN CRPF.

“As the presence of militants got ascertaine­d, they were given opportunit­y to surrender, however, they started firing indiscrimi­nately on the joint search party. In the exchange of fire, one militant of proscribed terror outfit Al-Badr was killed and his body was retrieved from the site of the encounter. He has been identified as Shakir Bashir Dar son of Bashir Ahmad Dar, a resident of Goripora, Awantipora,” a police spokesman said.

He said the slain militant as per police records was part of groups involved in various terror crime cases. “Shakir Bashir was earlier working as a terrorist associate with proscribed terror outfit LeT and joined terror folds of proscribed terror outfit Al-Badr recently,” the spokesman said.

He said that an AK-rifle with two magazines, 32 rounds, 1 Chinese pistol with 02 magazines, 16 rounds and 1 bagpack were recovered from the encounter site. The spokesman said while the said operation was in progress, it was learnt that while laying the cordon, another terrorist had managed to escape from the site and the informatio­n was shared with Awantipora police.

“During search, the escaped militant was tracked down and arrested from a truck (JK132397). He was identified as Shabir Ahmad Najar of Wuyan Khrew, linked with LeT. The driver of the truck has also been arrested,” he said.
