SAYS THAT THE HIMACHAL GOVERNMENT IS COMMITTED TO MAKING ROADS SAFER
People must be sensitised about road safety and obeying traffic rules as almost 90% road accidents occur due to human error, HP chief minister Jai Ram Thakur said on Monday while launching ‘National Road Safety Month’ in Shimla.
He said that the state government was committed to making roads safer.
“Continuous efforts are required to reduce the hazards of road accidents by involving communities and stakeholders in various awareness activities on road safety,” said Thakur.
He also felt the need for active participation of public, voluntary organisations, panchayati raj institutions, local bodies and related departments to make this campaign a big success.
Thakur said special training must be imparted to drivers so as they take all the precautions while driving school buses and commercial vehicles.
This will also bring behavioural changes in them, he said.
The CM said government had taken necessary steps for improving the black spots on the roads to mitigate the accidents.
He said that PWD and NHAI must ensure quality work in road constructions.
He said presently, there were 12.75 lakh driving licence holders in Himachal, including 82,325 women.
“Special efforts should be made to make them sensitive about road safety and their participation in the drive,” he said.
Later, he honoured HRTC driver Seema Thakur of Solan and female commercial vehicle driver Poonam Negi of Kinnaur.
He also honoured ‘ Good Samaritans’ Manmohan of Kalpa, Rai Singh of Paonta Sahib and Rajender Kumar of Arki.
