Srinagar Airport starts study to reduce wait time for passengers

To minimise the “harrowing experience” of passengers waiting for security frisking and x- ray checking queues at Srinagar International Airport, the airport authorities on Tuesday started a study to identify the bottlenecks at the airport and to reduce waiting time for travellers.

The three-day study is meant to understand the passenger flow at the airport and clear bottlenecks in areas like security frisking, check-in counters, vehicle checking areas and baggage X-ray portions.

Officials of the airport said that the study was aimed to identify the problem areas and ensure smooth flow of the passengers.

“It is our objective to ensure smooth flow of passengers, but there are several obstructions: Security ( related) frisking, check- in counters, vehicle checking and baggage X-ray are a few of such bottlenecks,” said airport director, Kuldeep Singh in a series of tweets.

The airport has hired Landrum & Brown, which according to its Twitter profile is a global leader in airport and aviation planning, to carry out the study.

Owing to militancy and also the strategic nature of the airport, security and checking activities become time consuming for passengers.

“We understand it can be a harrowing experience for the passengers to wait for their turn for long periods of time. The entire joy of a journey can be spoiled by a slow-moving queue. We want to minimise this waiting period to the barest essential to satisfy the security needs,” Singh said.

Owing to the increased flow of tourists and start of some international flights, the traffic at the airport of late has increased many folds.

Last week, the airport was notified as the custodian for import and export of goods directly from Srinagar to international destinations which is expected to help the business community of Kashmir.
