Heritage park to come up close to Jama Masjid, will open this week

The North Delhi Municipal Corporation is planning to throw open its newly developed Heritage Park on March 20. Located near the Parade Ground, the Heritage Park is sandwiched between two historic monuments — the Red Fort on one end and the Jama Masjid on the other.

A senior north corporation official said the 1.75 acre plot was developed in two phases and MPLAD (Members of Parliament Local Area Development) funds have been utilised to develop the public park. In the first phase, an area of about 1.75 acres was developed at an estimated cost of ₹7.65 crore while the second phase took up the 2.25 acres at an estimated cost of ₹10.03 crore.

“The theme of the park is inspired by the Mughal era architecture, which is typical of Shahjahanabad (Walled City). A combination of red sandstone, white marble and Dholpur stones has been used for making canopies while the wall of the park depicts stone jaalis and mehrabs made of red sandstone,” the official said.

The park has been named after Charti Lal Goel, former deputy mayor of the unified Municipal Corporation of Delhi and the first speaker of the Delhi legislative assembly. Former Rajya Sabha MP and Charti Lal Goel’s son Vijay Goel said they have invited President Ram Nath Kovind to inaugurate the park.

“The park will develop as a cultural hub of Walled City where Old Delhi delicacies will be served, apart from displays of handicraft and a platform for cultural gatherings. As the corporation was running short on funds, we took help from MPs cutting across parties, including Rupa Ganguly (BJP), Subramanian Swamy (BJP), KTS Tulsi (Congress), Swapan Dasgupta (BJP), and Dr Karan Singh (Congress), who contributed from their MPLAD funds,” Goel said.
