India’s first woman political cartoonist, Mita Roy made an indelible mark in political cartooning, she stirred the world of politics by her brilliance and brought forth its stark realities lacing it with a pinch of humour here and a dash of satire there. Mita’s common man is the ubiquitous observer who speaks out against the political upheavals, rampant corruption and financial crisis. Her initiation into cartooning was brought forth by her father who was a profession­al cartoonist. She has about three decades of experience in the print media. Her First cartoon published in ‘The Pioneer’ in 1985 under the caption Flood of Ideas by Mita Roy. Her regular pocket cartoon strip Bhaiyajee along with other editorial cartoons have earned her praises. She has also created Sahiba-a first ever ‘common woman’ character portrayed in Indian media. Also her columns like Aaeena, Dakhil-Kharij, The week that was, and Cartoonist’s eye view have appeared in some leading dailies. Her work also published in the Anthropolo­gy Now a magazine published from United States of America, Blitz, Dharmayug, Sunday Mail etc. Her work has been referenced in the advanced book of journalism and in Caricaturi­ng culture in India: Cartoons, history and the modern world by Ritu G Khanduri of University of Texas.

Mita has received a number of awards including Matrishree, Pride of the Nation, Pride of the country, Shaan-E- Bharat award and more. NOMINATED BY MOHANAA SHUKLAA
