>> AJAY DEVGN ON CHANGING INDUSTRY TRENDS

- Pooja Sharma

A lot of big Hindi films have done poor business lately. Is Hollywood a threat to Hindi cinema?

Things are changing and even the industry is changing. I think you will see a drastic change by next year. The audience is changing, but it takes time for the industry to change as well. That has happened already, but it will take you a year or two to see the results, because it takes a year or two to make a film.

Other forms of entertainment such as digital media and smartphones are also affecting the business…

It is going to take a lot of effort to pull audiences to theatres, because they have alternate entertainment options. However, they would love to come to theatres as long as you give them the right content.

Are you very particular about the projects you associate with?

Now, you really have to be.

Do you watch online content? Do you keep up with new trends?

I am completely updated, and I think you need to be in today’s time. Nowadays, I watch a lot of TV shows on popular streaming channels.

As a producer, would you like to make content for digital platforms?

I don’t think like that. But if something really inspires me, maybe I would. We have a department of people who are working on ideas. But I do watch what other people are doing and how things are happening and changing; it’s fabulous.

What is one emotion that you still find difficult to portray?

I think every emotion is very tough in a given situation. There can’t be one emotion that you will find difficult to portray. But it’s not an emotion. What I hate the most is dancing. That hasn’t changed and will never change.

What is it about dancing?

I don’t know, maybe it’s just in my head. I’ve always been very uncomfortable. I really can’t pinpoint the reason. I’ve always been vwery awkward, thinking about it (dancing) as well.

What kind of films do you like to watch?

I like watching all kinds of films, but it depends on my mood. Sometimes, I really want to watch something that is classy and subtle. And sometimes, when you want to have some fun, then I watch something entertaining; that could be action or comedy. That is the reason why you want to go to theatres for those theatrical experiences, especially with big films.

Do you manage to do that?

No, it’s very tough. I watch films at home. When everybody is around me, I’d love to watch some fun film. And when you are alone, sometimes you want to watch some classic cinema.

I think you will see a drastic change by next year. The audience is changing, but it takes time for the industry to change as well. AJAY DEVGN, ACTOR
