Math, history, and Varun!

Turns out, Dhawan’s disparate film choices have an indirect connect with his school days and exams

Varun Dhawan started his career with the high school drama Student of the Year (2012), but the actor has since mixed up his filmography by signing varied films such as Main Tera Hero (2014), ABCD 2 (2015), Badlapur (2015) and Dishoom (2016). And now, the actor has started working on Shoojit Sircar’s October, which will be followed by Abhishek Varman’s next film.

Varun says, “Not just as an actor but as a person too, I always wanted to experience different things. In fact, I was the same as a student as well. For instance — for two years in a row — I would get my highest marks in history and perform very badly in math. But surprisingly, I would get my highest marks in math the next year. I was never good at math, but there were years when I scored 85-90 marks in it, which was very good at that time (laughs).”

The Judwaa 2 actor also finds it very strange that he would “suddenly do well” in subjects that he wasn’t good at. “But I would subsequently go back to [doing well in] other subjects. So, I am very random with my selections. I like to explore different things. Also, I don’t believe that a person can be good at only one thing,” says Varun.

Actors these days certainly have to be good at a number of things besides acting. Social media and its trolls often require artistes to be adept at handling negative commentary. Varun has also faced the brunt of trolls a few times, but he feels it’s part of the package. “I feel this is part and parcel of fame. Journalists must be getting more trolled than me. It happens; what can you do about it? I feel that the more successful you get, the more you will face it,” says the actor, adding that by now, he has realised that everyone faces trolling.

“I did not face [trolling] at all in the first three-four years [of my career] even though I probably misbehaved more back then (la g ) started getting trolled more when I am well behaved. But it’s not only me; even the biggest stars face it, so who am I?” he says.
