As Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan get ready to team up again, we look at other pairs who set the box office ringing and are reuniting
T hey started their careers together with the 2012 hit, Student of The Year. After that, Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan went on to star in the successful Dulhania series — Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania followed by Badrinath Ki Dulhania. Now, rumours are rife that the hit on-screen pair is set to star in Abhishek Varman’s multistarrer, which will be produced by Karan Johar.
REAL FONDNESS
Not just Alia-Varun, a number of other on-screen hit duos are also set to be back on the silver screen. So, if the Piku (2015) pair, Deepika Padukone and Irrfan will feature in Vishal Bhardwaj’s next production, she will also be seen in Padmavati that stars Ranveer Singh too. Plus, Shah Rukh Khan is working in Aanand L Rai’s next alongside Anushka Sharma and Katrina Kaif.
“I will always be extremely fond of Shah Rukh because of my nature of relationship with him. SRK was my firstever co-actor. He was very helpful and kind to me so he will always hold a very special place in my heart,” says Anushka, who started her career with Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (2008) alongside SRK and then starred with him in Jab Tak Hai Jaan (2012, that also featured Katrina) and Jab Harry Met Sejal.
The coming Christmas weekend will see Salman Khan teaming up again with Katrina Kaif in Tiger Zinda Hai, after films such as Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya? (2005), Partner (2007) and Ek Tha Tiger (2012). Also, Aamir Khan’s next Thugs of Hindostan will see him star with Katrina (they worked together in Dhoom:3) and Fatima Sana Shaikh (they starred together as father and daughter in Dangal; 2016).
COMFORT AND TRUST
Actors, on their part, feel that the “comfort level” goes a long way vis-à-vis teaming up with same actors. Ranveer, for instance, has had hits such as Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela (2013) and Bajirao Mastani (2015), featuring Deepika opposite him.
“When I know I am going to do a scene with Deepika, I am not worried or concerned, as I know that I can trust her. She is a trusting, giving and supportive actor. If you struggle with anything, or have some difficulty, you know you can count on her for support,” says Ranveer.
According to experts, it is a great idea to repeat a hit onscreen pair but it has to be done with care. “Not just triedand-tested, these pairs are well-accepted too. Also, since audiences have witnessed their on-screen magic, they are always eager to watch them again as they can easily make a connect. But at the same, the script has to do complete justice to them,” says trade analyst Taran Adarsh.
