Wrong Number hits the right notes
Wrong Number has a pair of landline phones, two apartments and three couples. The play, directed by veteran filmmaker Raman Kumar, has a unique setting.
The play ‘Wrong Number’, staged at Sant Gadgeji Maharaj auditorium recently, has two crisscrossed apartments together on the stage which has two families – boss Yashwant and his wife Kamini played by Rakesh Bedi and Kashmira Shah and Yashwant’s young employee Avinash and Ranjana played by Rahul Bhuchar and Delnaaz Irani.
Avinash is having an extramarital relation with his boss’s wife. Ranjana gets suspicious and thus begins a tale of lies.
Yashwant, however, has full faith on his wife but her lie too lands her in trouble.
The common truth between both the lies is another couple, Natwar Chaurasia and his wife Poonam played by Avtar Gill and Kishwar Merchant. Natwar also works for Yashwant and thus beings a comedy of errors.
The hilarious cross-connections left the audience in splits. Barring the shaky start and few loud moments, the play unfolds well and picks up momentum in the second half.
In the era of mobile phones and network woes, landline phone plays an important role — especially in the closing shot. Another important character in the play is actor Rajesh Puri aka Lallu who comes at regular intervals as narrator to help the drama unfold.
Director Raman Kumar impresses with his satire, visual setting and well-timed dialogues. The two stories running parallel was a commendable effort.
At the end of the play producer-actor Rahul announced that they would be back with Rakesh Bedi’s new play ‘Jab We Separated’ on September 22.
