‘Some makers on TV are experimenting’

But often, weak response to good content deters them from creating more of it, says TV actor Sayantani Ghosh

Having done television and given memorable performances for close to two decades, Sayantani Ghosh is a witness to all the change the platform has gone through in this period. And the actor says that there’s much that has happened for both good and bad.

“Be it the stories or how they have been approached, the industry has gone through a lot. The competition has gone up, unlike how it was before, and the patience level has gone down. With new shows coming [up at short intervals] and new faces being launched now and then, the audience, too, have a lot to enjoy. What this leads to is more job opportunities. But I agree that at times the pressure is too much for everyone to handle,” says Sayantani, who started her career on the small screen with Kumkum — Ek Pyara Sa Bandhan in 2002.

What’s her take on one of the more common charges against the small screen, that the content has become regressive? “I don’t think the makers aren’t experimenting. They are trying, at least some of them are. At the end of the day everything boils down to how the audience is reacting to such shows. If they aren’t getting good viewership then how will the show run? Everybody is here to make money. So better response will mean more different and unique shows,” adds the actor.

And what kind of a character would Sayantani — who has experience playing both the lead and primary antagonists on TV — would like to play next? “I want to play character that will be both interesting and have that shock element. It’s a dream to do black and white classic. I hope I get to do such a show in my career,” says the actor, who will next be seen in a mythological show.
