‘There’s a big difference when you are singing for yourself vs for an actor’

Singer-songwriter Armaan Malik, unlike his elder brother, music composer Amaal Mallik, knows the difference between independent and film music. “I personally feel, from a singer’s perspective, there’s a big difference when it comes to singing for yourself and singing for an actor,” he says.

Further explaining his perspective, the 23-year-old shares, “For example, if I am singing for actor Salman Khan, the song would require boldness (bolder tone). Whereas for someone like Sidharth Malhotra or Varun [Dhawan], I could sing in my natural tone (and voice).”

Apart from actors, the mood of the song also has an impact on Armaan. Perhaps that’s why, even though he loves singing for films, his “true self” is reflected in independent music. “When it comes to my independent stuff I have the liberty to sing the way I want to and add my own touches to it. My true self comes out in non-film music,” he says.

“I will continue to nurture indie pop in the country with newer singles and music videos, but when I say I want to take my music [to a] global [platform] I mean that I want to do purely original English music. I have been writing a lot of songs in English for quite some time and it’s been a childhood dream to release this music. So, hopefully, soon that dream will take shape,” he signs off.
