Blue is the new festive black
This party season witnessed different hues of blue wreaking a multisensory assault like never before. Gone are the mundane blacks and the earthy beiges. From indigo to navy to cobalt to midnight — this luscious and transformative tone has emerged to be the ultimate pick on the red carpet and at Bollywood soirees.
Last week, Sidharth Malhotra picked a deep blue khadi kurta embroidered with motifs in green, off-white and red resham threads and edged with geometric borders from Mard by Abu Sandeep. He paired it with an off-white churidar to create the perfect contrast. While Sonakshi Sinha was seen in a midnight blue shimmery twinset from Falguni and Shane Peacock, model Rahi Chadda looked dapper in a blue blazer from Gauarv Gupta. Blue was also the go-to pick for celebrities like Karan Johar, Saif Ali Khan and Arjun Kapoor for their Diwali outings.
What is it about the allure of this hue which makes it such a sensation this season? “We love all shades of blue. Deeper blues like royal and navy create high impact and is the perfect canvas for resham, mirror, zardozi and gota embroideries. They lend a regal air to the ensemble and are a fitting tribute to the celebration,” says designer Sandeep Khosla.
Taking a radical departure from the predictable blacks, creams and golds, celebs and their styling teams seem to be transfixed by the classic and timeless blue.
“It works well for festive season since the colour is not attached to any stereotype per se — it is not essentially traditional and is certainly among one of the many darker hues, which is considered sexy for an evening wear. We really enjoy working with this colour, especially the midnight blue. It has been really popular among my clients because of its eclectic opulence,” says designer
Gaurav Gupta.
