WHAT MAKES AN ACTOR RELEVANT?

Actor Sonakshi Sinha feels that one isn’t relevant in showbiz if people aren’t interested in your personal life

As a public figure, it is natural that people will want to know everything about you — right from the food you like to who you are dating. And while actor Sonakshi Sinha understands that now, she didn’t do so initially.

“At some point, you make your peace with it,” she tells us, adding, “If you are in the profession, it’s part and parcel of your job. Initially, it was a bit of a struggle, like I wouldn’t understand why people are so interested. Then I realised that if they are not interested, that’s a problem. Being in the profession that I am in, if they are not interested in what you are doing, then you are not relevant. That’s when I made my peace with it. I’d rather have people wanting to know more about me than not!”

The 32-year-old is on a career high, with her last release Mission Mangal doing really well, and her next being Dabangg 3 alongside Salman Khan. Her film choices have been as varied as Dabangg (2010) and Lootera (2013). So, does she go to her parents, actors Shatrughan Sinha and Poonam Sinha for advice? She says it would be foolish not to.

“I am really thankful to my parents that the end decision is always mine. I do go to them for advice because they have been in the industry for long. They have a reservoir of experience, and it would be stupid on my part to not utilise it. When I am in a dilemma about a film or I’m not sure of the subject, I do ask them their opinion. In fact, I make my mom sit for a lot of narrations just for her opinion, because it’s good to get another perspective as well. I definitely involve them,” she reveals.

Is marriage on the cards or is career the priority? Sonakshi laughs, “Right now, my career, because I don’t have anyone to marry! But I’m the kind of girl who believes in the institution of marriage. In my group of friends, I was the one who wanted to get married first. But all my friends are married, and I’m left! Everything has a time and place. I am not going to go chasing after it.”

I am not thinking about the choices I have made in the past. I am looking ahead in life. It gives me satisfaction that directors such as Ribhu Dasgupta and Amole Gupte are showing confidence in me to play such strong characters.
