I’m always greedy to work with first-time directors: Annup Sonii

There’s always a fresh energy that Annup Sonii feels when he gets to collaborat­e with first-time directors, and more so when the subject of a project is something socially relevant.

The actor will next be seen in Vanita Omung Kumar’s directoria­l debut, a short film Ave Maria, which deals with child sexual abuse and centres around a Christian family in Goa. Annup says his first draw to the film was the subject. “It’s a very important story to tell and a very important message to be given. There are plenty of films on this subject and people are talking about it but I think every film is important... Any number of films will be less unless this message reaches out to each and everyone in the country.”

Months after veteran actor Rip Torn’s death, the reason for the same has finally been revealed. Torn, best known for starring in the Men in Black franchise, died in July this year at the age of 88.

On her part, Vanita, who has worked as a production designer and has a home decor brand, says she always used her innermost thoughts, feelings and inspiratio­ns to create. “So it was only but natural to use a subject that I was and most passionate or affected by in my first directoria­l,” she says, adding she feels women filmmakers “have that something extra” when they want to convey a message that hits the right buttons.

“Women are creating their own future in the field... it is there for all to see. And our passionate bone works in our favour where filmmaking is concerned,” she adds.

The documents showed that the actor had been fighting the progressiv­e disease that affects a person’s memory and mental functions for “years”.

His body was buried in Poughkeeps­ie, New York, the certificat­e further stated.

Torn was known for his stage and screen presence that spanned a total of 7 decades. He was best known for starring in critically­acclaimed features such as Cross Creek (1983) and Sweet Bird of Youth (1962).

He transition­ed into comedy with his legendary role as the ethically challenged television producer in The Larry Sanders Show, which scored him an Emmy.
