Putting behind gloomy pandemic days, Poila Baisakh - The Bengali New Year was largely celebrated in the city at different locations.

Observed on the first day of the Bengali calendar, which falls on April 15 the festival is a time for new beginnings. City folks celebrated the day by visiting friends and family, and keeping the ‘Shubho Noboborsho’ spirit high.

Hundreds of music lovers thronged to Bengali Club and Youngmens Associatio­n at Shivaji Marg on Friday evening to enjoy a musical event organised to mark the Poila Baisakh.

The club invited singer Anushka Patro, one of the finalist of television reality show to add colours of entertainm­ent to the occasion. Patro enthralled the audience with her melodious voice. Earlier, she started with popular Rabindra Sangeet, Amaro Porano Jaha Chay…

“Such an extensive revelry has been held after a gap of two long years. In 2020 and 2021, the New Year revelry was on hold due to Covid restrictio­ns. But as the situation has eased a bit and as there are no restrictio­ns as such, we went ahead with the event this year,” said the club president Arun Banerjee.

As a mark of tribute to late Lata Mangeshkar, the young singer sang a few modern Bengali songs like Ja Re Ja Re Ud Ja Re Panchhi. Her next song was Madhumalat­i Dake Aay...Winning the hearts of

young audience, Patro sang Mon Majhi Re, a popular song by Arijit Singh. She also sang Mere Rashke Qamar .... along with latest chartbuste­r, Saami Saami from Pushpa. Patro came down from the stage to make the audience dance to her songs. Banerjee and other members warmly welcomed and distribute­d sweets to all the visitors. The musical evening was attended by several prominent personalit­ies including Commission­er of Police, Dhruva Kant Thakur, his wife Shweta Thakur, Abhijit Sarkar, Dr Subhashish Munshi, Sajal and Sangeeta Banerjee, Bulbul Godiyal, Madhumita Bose and many others.

A cultural evening to partake in traditiona­l Bengali Soiree was held with prominent guests, singers, Adda and mouth-watering Bengali cuisines. Dress code was traditiona­l for all. Guests were seen swaying to Bangla Rock and engrossed in Rabindra Sangeet. Talking about the sumptuous meal served on the occasion organiser Joyshree Chatterjee shared, “Traditiona­l Bengali welcome drinks like Doi Khjur Gurer ghol and Aam Pannar Shorbot were served. Main Course constitute­d of Luchi, Begun Bhaja, Dhokar Dalna, Basonti Polao, Katla Kalia and Doi Pabda.
