Miscreants molest, drag girl athlete on road alongside car

MEERUT: Five miscreants allegedly molested, attacked and injured a state-level girl athlete in Saharanpur on Wednesday when she was practising for a cross-country race, scheduled for July 27.

The miscreants, who were in a car, passed objectiona­ble comments against her and when she opposed, they caught hold of her and dragged her to some distance along with their car. The coach and other ath- letes admitted the girl to the district hospital from where she was shifted to a private hospital.

Police have lodged an FIR against the culprits on the basis of the complaint of coach Sandeep Kumar. Three of them have been arrested while two are absconding. Those nabbed have been identified as Savej, Indrajeet and Varun while the other two are Deepak Gujar and Jeetu.

All the accused are of 20 to 25 years of age. Sources say Kumar chased the miscreants and caught hold of one of them while the four others managed to escape in their car.

The detained youth revealed the identity of his associates and the other athletes, along with Kumar, nabbed two more molesters from different locations of the city and handed them over to the police. Police teams are hunting for the other two culprits.

“We have arrested three accused while raids are on to arrest the remaining two who have already been identified,” said SSP Vijay Yadav while terming the incident as unfortunat­e.

The girl belongs to Beenpur village of Gangoh area in the district and has won several championsh­ips at district and division level.
