KANPUR: A 20-year-old private tutor was allegedly gangraped and then set on fire two days ago in Etawah, the home district of chief minister Akhilesh Yadav, the police said on Friday. The police have not been able to make a single arrest in this connection so far.

ETAWAH SSP NILABHJA CHOWDHRY, HOWEVER, SAID THE GIRL SET HERSELF ABLAZE AFTER HER FIANCÉ’S FAMILY MEMBERS REFUSED TO SOLEMNISE THE MARRIAGE WITHOUT DOWRY

KANPUR: Police have not been able to make a single arrest in connection with the rape a 20-yearold-girl who was later set afire in Etawah late on Wednesday evening. The girl is battling for her life at SGPGI hospital in Saifai with 90% burns.

The incident happened at the house of the girl’s fiancé. She had gone there to persuade his family to solemnise their marriage without dowry. The girl, a graduate, was in love with one Farhan, who resided in the same village and wanted to marry her too. Some elderly members of the girl’s family had met the boy’s family recently to sort things out before their marriage. But the matter took an ugly turn when the groom’s family demanded Rs 5 lakh as dowry, said an official.

The marriage didn’t take place giving rise to hostility between the two families. On Wednesday, the girl was called by her fiancé to his place to settle things. But that was just a trap. She was first raped by Farhan and his friends in the presence of his family members and set afire. Badly burnt, the girl somehow managed to run away from there and reached to her house.

Etawah senior superintendent of police Nilabhja Chowdhry, however, said the girl set herself ablaze after her fiancé’s family members refused to solemnise the marriage without dowry.

He said the girl’s father had lodged an FIR levelling serious charges of gang-rape and murderous assault to implicate Farhan and his family.

He said efforts were on to nab the culprits, who had gone underground after locking their house.
