LUCKNOW: Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will lay more emphasis on life skills, value education and gender sensitisation as an integral part of the curriculum. The board is organising an international summit for schools affiliated to it to discuss the issue and later integrate it in its curriculum.

Keeping uniqueness and exposure in mind, CBSE will be conducting summit at two levels comprising one international and 14 regional summits in the period from September till November. Rani Laxmi Bai Memorial School in city will host one of the 14 regional summits.

This initiative is in tandem with the educational reforms to empower the affective domain of the learners so that they are able to develop a sense of self-confidence, ecosensitivity and right approaches to life processes, health, wellbeing and gender.

In a communication with the CBSE school principals, Dr Sadhana Parashar, director of International Life Skills, Values, Gender, School Health and Well-being Summit, says, “The Board recognises the value of creating awareness regarding health and wellness, life skills, gender sensitivity, value education-with national and global perspectives.”

She says, “The summit aims to develop a sense of self-confidence, sensitivity and awareness towards various issues and concerns such as-gender, environment, health and wellbeing in the learners. It will also help to strengthen the ideals delineated in National Health Policy, 1983, and the National Policy of Education, 1986 as well as National Curriculum Framework 2005.”

Event partner, Expressions India, is a community-based outreach programme for promotion of life skills education, school health and community wellness. It is founded by a group of “dedicated mental health professionals for creating awareness, responsibility and empowerment among school going adolescents, their parents and teachers”.

Every school needs to register five representatives (four students + one teacher/school counsellor) before August 30. Detailed schedule of event is to be announced soon.

The objectives of the summit are: to understand and review the concept, needs and trends of school health and life skills, value education - national, global perspectives and research, to focus on good practices in assessment and continuous evaluation of skills based co - scholastic development and to ensure integration of school safety, sanitation, nutrition, hygiene and health check up programme within the comprehensive school health education curriculum and life-skills programming.

To facilitate dissemination of value education by promoting the role of peer educator and student’s participation with a special focus on gender sensitisation and to promote life skills and health by strengthening integrated community involvement activities, designed to engage parents and families as active participants in their children’s health and wellbeing, thereby including the staff health promotion policy, are some of the other objectives.
