Narendra Modi vs Manmohan Singh

Never in all these years of India’s independen­ce has any chief minister wanted to compare his Independen­ce Day speech with that of the Prime Minister. Narendra Modi, as a young boy, ran up and down the railway platform selling tea to passengers.

Today, he wants to compare himself with Dr Manmohan Singh, an intellectu­al giant from whom the world leaders seek advice on financial matters, be it the German Chancellor or the President of the United States of America.

The economic reforms of 1991-92 have seen India emerge from the depths of economic despair to prosperity, be it in the build-up of foreign exchange reserves, rise in exports, increase per capita income many fold.

His increasing the MSP for all crops put money in the hands of farmers, the MNREGA gave the farm labour and consequent­ly other casual labourers higher wages.

This has been the single most reason for reducing poverty in India. The food security bill will almost eradicate poverty from India. Even the United Nations has complement­ed India’s effort in reducing poverty in the last 10 years.

As finance minister, Manmohan Singh took a small tiffin box to his office as lunch. He lived simply and frugally. He has lived to see how India can prosper economical­ly. The India-US civil nuclear

deal was one such endeavor to ensure that India grows economical­ly for decades to come with cheap nuclear power.

The BJP has shown that it has become bankrupt in finding a leader for themselves after Atal Bihari Vajpayee. LK Advani has failed them twice.

The BJP is stalling the second generation of economic reform the UPA II is wanting to implement because they (the BJP) are scared that once these economic reforms are ushered in, no one will look at them. They may be relegated to two seats as they were as the Jan Sangh in the 1960s.
