LUCKNOW: Women Power Line (WPL) -1090, a dedicated service by the UP police to handle cases of phone stalking and harassment, has extended its reach to the classrooms.

At least five girls of IT College have been nominated as its representatives.

Known as ‘Power Angels’, these representatives would work as a connecting link between the victims and the WPL.

The WPL’s women cops would maintain the database of these representatives and their complaints would be attended on priority.

“These students would make other girls aware about the Power Line’s working and even help them by forwarding their problems in case they are reluctant to call the 1090 service,” said Navniet Sekera, DIG Lucknow, who has played a crucial role in materialising the 1090 concept.

“The representatives would also be issued a identity cards,” Sekera said while speaking to media persons on Friday while launching the awareness programme on IT College campus.

The DIG said similar representatives would also be nominated from other girls’ colleges in the city and the network would gradually be extended to educational institutions in other districts.

Sekera said, “Girls often hesitate in contacting the Power Line or any other law enforcement agency themselves. In such cases, the ‘Power Angels’ can help them by communicating their problems to the WPL.”

He said the representatives could also inform the Power Line about the eve-teasing prone spots near colleges and any other localities.

The WPL would try to solve victims’ problems with the help of the local police station and stepping up police patrol in the areas, if required, he added.

The DIG said the plan is to have one representative each in every classroom and the principals of different colleges and schools would be approached for this purpose. He said they would be asked to select some girls, who are bold enough to call up the WPL and ready to help their classmates.
