BEIJING: The teenage son of a famous Chinese army general was sentenced on Thursday to 10 years in prison for rape, the state media reported.

According to court proceedings, a group of five men gang raped the victim in a hotel after having drinks with her in February this year. Earlier, they had befriended her in a bar in the university district of Haidian in Beijing.

The five were detained after the victim, identified by the state media as Yang, reported to the police that she was forced to accompany the suspects from the bar to a hotel where she was then assaulted. Later, they gave her 2000 Yuan and dumped her on the roadside.

Li and the remaining four suspects were arrested from a parking lot in Beijing’s Chaoyang district. The case soon came to the spotlight as the son of Li Shuangjiang, a renowned Chinese tenor and the dean of the music department of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Academy of Arts, was among the five suspects.

Li Tianyi’s mother Meng Ge is also a well-known PLA singer.

Two years ago, Li and another teenager attacked a couple who allegedly blocked their driveway near the entrance of a residential community in Beijing. During interrogation, Li denied any sexual relations with the woman. His mother had launched a campaign against the victim and the owner of the bar, claiming that he ran a sex racket from its premises. But the court dismissed the claims of the defendants.
