12 INJURED IN ELEVATOR FREE FALL AT NABARD

ACCIDENT Three suffer fractures while others sustain internal injuries. Police say lift was ill-maintained

At least 12 people were seriously injured on Thursday morning after an elevator in the National Bank of Agricultur­e and Rural Developmen­t (NABARD) building in Gomti Nagar came down crashing from the fifth floor, apparently after its steel wire rope broke due to overloadin­g.

Three persons fractured their legs (one of them fractured both legs) while others sustained internal injuries in the mishap. The victims were undergoing treatment in a private hospital.

Those injured included a NABARD officer and members of different NGOs working in the field of rural developmen­t. They had come to attend the meeting of NABARD’s consultanc­y services -- NABCONS on Thursday.

The victims were identified as DR Singh, 45, district developmen­t manager of NABARD; DP Yadav, 54; Chandreshw­ar Mishra, 52; SP Singh, 45; BS Yadav, 50; KK Saxena, 52; Ashok Dixit, 53; Ajai Srivastava, 44; RK Tiwari, 55; Mahipal Singh, 58; Buddhi Lal, 52, and Radhey Shyam, 50.

According to reports, the incident took place around 10 am when the lift carrying 12 people was moving upwards to the fifth floor. “At least 10 people boarded the lift from the ground floor, after which two others joined in on the fourth floor. The lift crashed after its steel wire rope broke. It bounced three times after hitting the ground,” said one of the injured people.

“The lift was overcrowde­d and people fell over each other after it hit the ground. I could not believe that we were alive,” added the victim. He said, “The security rushed towards the lift after we kept shouting for help for 10 minutes. It was then we were taken out and rushed to the hospital.”

UB Singh, SO, Gomti Nagar said, “The NABARD staff did not inform the police. But we, along with the fire services team, reached the spot on our own after getting the informatio­n from some other source.”

He said the lift had not been in good shape for a long time. So far no FIR was registered in the matter, added the CO.
