Restoring normalcy a big challenge: Goel
New ADG (law and order) Mukul Goel on Thursday said communal violence in Muzaffarnagar and other districts of west UP could have been avoided had the police handled the Kaval incident aptly.
“It’s not possible to deploy police force in each village of Muzaffarnagar to maintain law and order. Assistance of villagers would be taken to restore harmony and peace in the area,” he said.
Talking to media persons after taking charge in the evening, he said restoring normalcy in west UP was a major challenge. “Maintaining law and order during the upcoming festivals is another challenge for me,” he said.
When asked about the political pressure on cops, he said, “There is pressure on the officers working in the field and they have to ensure that there is rule of law in their respective area.”
Goel further that there was a system under which a policeman had to discharge his duties.
In reply to another question, Goel said, “I will discuss with the DGP the measures and strategy required to be taken by the police to maintain law and order in the riot-hit Muzaffarnagar.” He said the cops would have to work in a professional manner.
“These days, gangs of criminals are armed with sophisticated weapons. Training is being imparted to the police personnel to take on the might of the criminals,” the new ADG (law and order) added.
