Apex court hearing due, but ruling BCCI camp upbeat

MUMBAI: The stage seems to be set for N Srinivasan to remain in the president’s chair for one more year with the Chennai strongman managing to eliminate every possibility of a coup days before the Annual General Meeting (AGM) scheduled on Sunday.

Though the Supreme Court will hear a plea seeking to restrain Srinivasan from chairing the AGM and contesting the election on Friday, given the confidence of the BCCI officebearers, it seems the tide has turned and Srinivasan expects a positive ruling.

“We are least bothered by the hearing as we are confident that the court will rule in our favour,” said a BCCI official. “As far as the AGM is concerned, it is going to be a smooth affair and Srinivasan is set to get an extension with every unit in the South Zone backing his candidature,” he added.

However, the other key posts like secretary, treasurer and joint secretary, apart from vicepresidents, will be on offer when the BCCI officials come together for their annual meeting.

But going by how the BCCI functions, it can be safely assumed that every issue will be sorted out even before the deadline for nomination, which is 4pm on Saturday.

“While a lot depends on equations within zones for appointing vice-presidents, the secretary and treasurer’s posts are likely to go to zones that remained loyal to Srinivasan during the recent crisis.

Even the vice-presidents’ composition is likely to remain the same with maybe a change or two expected,” said another Board official.

The issue of appointing the IPL governing council chairman is also expected to come up for discussion as Rajeev Shukla has refused to continue in the post.

And going by the BCCI’s preference, a political bigwig is likely to replace Shukla.

“These are routine issues which come up in every AGM. The only thing which was expected to add colour to the meeting was Srinivasan’s extension, and so far it appears the Tamil Nadu association chief has covered all the bases to ensure he gets an extension,” said the official.

The BCCI is also set to retain senior selectors for another year. The junior panel will see a change given the rotation policy followed by the Board.
