Nearly 15% people are diabetic and every fifth person has hypertension in Uttar Pradesh. This is a major cause of concern as non-infectious diseases and lifestyle disorders are giving rise to chronic ailments, said Dr Kausar Usman of the department of Medicine at KGMU.

“About 50% of those going for dialysis due to kidney failure are diabetic,” he said while talking about the correlation between lifestyle and other diseases.

The threat of vector-borne diseases too looms large, as there are hardly any measures to control mosquitoes spreading malaria, dengue and other diseases, he said. Cases of renal failure are becoming common and the average age of kidney failure has come down from 50 to 40 -- even 25-year-olds are being seen in hospitals for dialysis, say experts.

There’s been a growing incidence of diabetic retinopathy and computer eye trauma in the past two years as diabetes and stressful long hours of work take a toll on the eyes of people. “Refractive error and ocular eye are the other problems on the

rise,” said Dr Pushpraj Singh of Vasan Eyecare.

Erratic eating habits have given rise to arthritis and about 20% of the patients are below 30 years of age, said Dr Sandeep Kapoor, a renowned replacement surgeon of Lucknow.

“Joint pain problems have restricted the life of people above 40. But life can be made better with a little effort,” he added.

As per the annual health survey, roughly 68.8% kids born in Lucknow are given formula/animal milk along with mother’s milk while exclusive breastfeeding up to six months saves a child from infection and problems such as diarrhoea.

“Obesity among kids too is becoming common. This can lead to childhood diabetes,” said Dr Usman.
