MUZAFFARNAGAR: Angry at recurring incidents of molestation and eve-teasing, some women set fire to a roadside canteen under the Bhopa flyover connecting city area with new Mandi.

Notably, there has been a spurt in eve-teasing and molestation cases in Muzaffarnagar. Despite complaints, cops have initiated no action so far. As a matter of routine, a group of hoodlums occupies a vantage point on the way to colleges and prominent coaching centres and passes lewd comments on girls. Near Bhopa flyover, even the newly married women are not spared and are subjected to vulgar comments.

Fed up with the situation, some women living in a locality near the flyover decided to punish the eve-teasers. They started a silent vigil to identify the culprits and soon came to know that the hoodlums frequented a temporary canteen under the Bhopa flyover, run by Jagdish of Shivpuri who also served alcohol to his customers.

On Saturday, the women went to meet the district officials but when they failed in their effort, they decided to punish Jagdish themselves.

A group of women armed with rods and sticks reached the canteen and ransacked it. All the hoodlums and owner Jagdish escaped after the assault but the irate women burnt the canteen down.

The women Santosh, Seema, Mamta, Indravati, Khajani, Chandravati, Kailasho, Roshani, Phoolvati, Kavita, Rani, Beena, Lakshmi, Kamlesh, Pooja, Neeshu, Bala, Ratana and Meena, who live in a locality near Bhopa Road fly- over, said that the women passing through this area were much discomfited with the eveteasing and police had failed to act on the complaints. So, they decided to swing into action. The women also warned a wine shop owner to check gathering of unholy elements at his outlet, else they would burn it too.
