LUCKNOW: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief Rajnath Singh alternately played the teacher and the politician while addressing a series of functions in Lucknow from where he is seeking to inherit the legacy of former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who held the seat for a record five terms.

While he launched a scathing attack on the BSP, saying that the party had done little for the backwards and dalits with whose support its chief Mayawati came to power with an absolute majority in the 2007 UP polls, he also played the teacher at another function, testing the ability of the students in physics and chemistry. Appealing to the backwards and dalits at a party function organized by SC/ST cell to help the BJP achieve its ‘272 plus’ mission, Singh said the BSP merely treated dalits as a vote bank. “Only a BJP government would be able to give you that respect and work for your betterment,” he said. The BJP chief invoked Vajpayee, saying that the five-time Lucknow MP had won global acclaim as he conducted himself with grace. While interacting with the stu- dents at Ramdhin Singh Inter College, Babuganj, the BJP chief, who has been a former physics lecturer also tested the students by asking them questions on mathematics, physics and chemistry. Rajnath also defended the party’s PM candidate Narendra Modi, saying the more he was attacked, the more he grew in stature.

been praised not just by BJP but also by the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation which is headed by Congress chief Sonia Gandhi,” he said. He also appealed to the youths to help elect a BJP government, which alone was “capable of providing a bright future for the youths.” “This is your election. You all are contesting it and you all will win it,” he told the youths at various functions. Journalist Santosh Valmiki briefed Rajnath about the problems faced by the dalits.
