LUCKNOW: In the snaky and busy bylanes of Old city, where the aroma of the famous Tundey kebabs wafts through, the visitors that pass by often hear a peculiar noise. The continuous tapping sound is often distracting for those who are busy relishing the Lucknow izaykaat this renowned eating joint at the Akhbari Gate. But only curious ones take the pains to peep into the adjacent swanky shop.

Silver leaves (chandi varq) are in the making here. The profession isn’t very common any more, say those who are into the business for generations. Many have switched to other jobs and even those who still continue with the family’s profession have plans not to train their children in the business.

“There is nothing good left in the task. Who knows that we even exist in the city today at some corner?,” says Shariq who was busy beating the silver pieces, making a thin leaf out of it.

Even when the election buzz is loud enough and candidates contesting polls are targeting voters, seeking their support, no political party or leader has ever met them. There have never been any promises or policies made for them and to save their dieing profession. “There is mention of chikankari, zardozi and Lucknow’s calligraphy at some point. But we are nowhere in the list,” says Javed Ahmad, another man at the shop.

People say that there are hardly 20-25 families left in the city who are into this profession. The areas include Chowk, Nakkhas and Raja Bazar where the work is done.

“Tourists are curious. When they come to the Old city lanes, the click our pictures and ask about our work. But our very own people and government never care for us,” said Jameel, another man involved in the business.

All that such workers need is some recognition for their skill. “It would be good if government promotes us as well like any other famous and unique things in Lucknow to save the art from fading,” he added.

Eight grams of silver yields 150 pieces of varq that takes about 3-4 hours to complete. The varq is used in sweets and medicines for its numerous health benefits.
