Prez’s son ditches party line to shield ‘friend’ Tapas

- Surojit Ghosh Hazra

SURI: Amid the furore caused by his unsavoury remarks, Tapas Pal has found a voice of support from Abhijit Mukherjee, the President’s son and a Congress MP.

“Tapas is my friend,” said the MP from Jangipur. “Though I don’t support what he said, but now that he has asked for an unconditional apology, I think this matter shouldn’t be carried forward anymore.”

THIS IS CONTRARY TO THE VIEW HELD BY HIS PARTY. CONGRESS HAS DEMANDED THAT PAL BE EXPELLED AS A MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT

This is contrary to the view held by his party. The Congress has demanded that Pal be expelled as Member of Parliament.

The Trinamool Congress MP’s controversial comments rocked the West Bengal Assembly on Tuesday with the Congress staging a walk-out after the Speaker disallowed its adjournment motion, demanding Pal’s immediate arrest.

“The language used by Tapas Pal is abominable,” said Manas Bhunia, Congress MLA and former president of the West Beng al Pradesh Cong ress Committee. “The chief minister and other leaders of the Trinamool Congress must clear their stand on this issue. The situation demands suo motu action from the government and the party.”

Talking with HT, he said that “through his statement, Pal has dishonoured people of Bengal”. He added that his party will not take this issue lightly.

However, on Wednesday, Abhijit Mukherjee said that he is not for Pal’s expulsion as MP. He said that in the way Parliament runs, amid all the chaos and many “unconstitutional speeches”, that would call for the “expulsion of many a member”.
