LUCKNOW: In a daylight incident, burglars decamped with cash and valuables wor th several lakhs after breaking into a Lucknow University professor Rakesh Chandra’s house here in Nirala Nagar locality in Hasanganj police area on Thursday afternoon.

The police suspect that a person, who is aware about the routine movement of the professor, is involved in the incident, as burglary took placed between 11am and 2pm when he was in the university taking classes.

His sister Shalini Mathur, who also stays along with him, was also not present in the house during the same period.

Rakesh Chandra told Hindustan Times he found his main door opened when he returned from the university and gradually discovered the theft when he entered the house.

He said the entire house was ransacked and the burglars had taken away cash around ` 60,000 and valuables worth several lakhs.

Dinesh Singh, in charge of Hasanganj police station, said the dog squad was called to gather some substantial clue about the burglars but it was not of much help, as so many people had entered the house before the arrival of the police. He said the dog squad failed to smell out the exact route from where the burglars would have reached the house.

He said the role of person familiar to the family is suspected in the crime as the burglars entered the house only between the time span when the professor and his sister were not present there.

He said the lock of the main door was also apparently opened using a duplicate key.

He said the police however are further trying to trace the burglars.
