Is milk killing you? A camp organised by Parag with the help of the district administration found that 70% households in Jankipuram are consuming adulterated milk. Ninetythree samples were tested during the camp held from July 1 to 3, of which 67 were adulterated in some way.

N o w, P a r a g (UP Cooperative Milk Federation) will hold similar camps across the city in coming days. “We were shocked that 18 milk samples had soda and detergents, which were used as whiteners; 49 samples contained water and some of them were also using milk powder to maintain whiteness,” said Parag general manager RK Sachan.

LUCKNOW:

“We had invited residents to give us milk samples, even if they were of Parag, so that we could test the quality of milk supplied to them.”

Medical superintendent of Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) Rakesh Kapoor said, “Milk is used in tea, coffee, sweets, etc and if quality of milk is compromised, it will surely affect the health of an individual. Milk, if diluted with water, has less nutritional value; but contaminated water can also cause additional health problems. This is a cause of concern for us.”

He said the adulterants most preferred by milkmen in the city were caustic soda (sodium hydroxide), ammonium sulphate, starch, sugar, urea and even formalin, which can cause a lot of damage to human organs.

Dr Kapoor said, “Milk adulterants can have hazardous health effects. Caustic soda can cause food poisoning and other gastrointestinal complications. It can be lethal for hypertension and heart ailments patients. Formalin can damage the liver and urea, the kidneys.”

In order to avoid these dangers, one must buy milk from top brands and avoid local milkmen, as they are the ones giving you a slow death, added Dr Kapoor.

Meanwhile, Parag general manager RK Sachan said they were going to organise camps in Vibhutikhand near Mantri Awas, Paltan crossing in Aliganj, Priyadarshini colony, Saraswati apartment in Gomti Nagar extension, E block bus stop in Rajajipuram, Kailashpuri on Jail Road and Talab Nepalganj in Telibagh.
