Man who exposed Didi’s MP says ‘public good’ made him video Pal

- Halim Mondal

NADIA: He handed over the footage of Tapas Pal threatening supporters of the Opposition party not for monetary gains but to ‘expose the political scenario’ in the state.

“I have handed over the footage to the media. I haven’t sold it, but I have given it out to expose what is going on in the political space. I have been driven by public good and will hand over any such material (in future),” he said.

Mollah, who made the statement to a Bengali television channel, is a middle-aged man, and won as an independent in the 2013 panchayat polls.

His remarks seemed designed to contradict the chief minister’s claim on Wednesday that TV chan- nels purchased the video footage, while arguing Pal was a victim of media conspiracy. She also said that people were ‘making a hue and cry over small incidents’, seen in reference to the incident.

This came even as Trinamool Congress leaders launched a hunt to find out who recorded the TMC MPs speech on June 14 and deliv- ered it to the media.

Tapas Saha, general secretary, Nadia Trinamool Congress said that he thought somebody from TMC could have done it, “but it can also be a conspiracy CPI(M)”.

Some Trinamool leaders have also checked the cell phones of people they know in the area. “A local party supporter checked my phone. But I deleted whatever I recorded immediately after the controversy,” said a villager.

In one video taken in Choumaha village Pal was seen threatening the women supporters of CPI(M) in the area with rape and murder. In another video taken at Gopinath village on the same day, Pal was seen exhorting supporters to bring CPI(M) supporters whom he would behead.
