Lahiri gets Open surprise during honeymoon

NEW DELHI: India’s Anirban Lahiri is one of 10 golfers who have earned a berth at next week’s British Open as the highest ranked non-exempt players in the Official World Golf Ranking.

Lahiri, currently placed 81 in the world rankings, will be India’s sole representa­tive at the 143rd Open Championsh­ip, scheduled to be played from July 17-20. Lahiri has enjoyed one of his best seasons in 2014. He won his first even to utside India at the Indonesian Masters in April and also played a key role in Team Asia’s strong comeback that helped them achieve a draw against Team Europe at the EurAsia Cup. The 27-year-old Bangalorea­n also achieved his career-best world ranking of 64 earlier this year. He currently leads the Asian Tour Order of Merit with a win and four other top-10s. Lahiri, who recently tied the knot, was caught by surprise. “I am two days into my 10-day honeymoon. In the middle of a tropical rainforest in Madagascar and trying to get back to India now as soon as possible. Total chaos. Super excited,” said Lahiri.

HC NOT TO INTERFERE IN WRESTLERS’ SELECTION

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court refused to tinker with the list of selected wrestlers for the Commonweal­th Games but asked the Centre to ensure adherence to the National Sports Code in future selections of athletes and supporting staff. Three petitions were filed by five wrestlers including Amit Kumar Dhankar, Joginder Kumar, Rahul Aware, Mausam Khatri and Rajneesh Dalal challengin­g the inaction of the WFI for not selecting a team for the Commonweal­th Games in accordance with the NSC.

IOA WRITES TO PM TO SAVE ASIAD BID

NEW DELHI: In a last-ditch attempt to salvage hopes of India bidding for the 2019 Asian Games, the Indian Olympic Associatio­n sought an urgent meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking government’s support. IOA secretary-general Rajeev Mehta said that only the Prime Minister could save the situation after the Olympic Council of Asia gave an extension of just “a couple of days” to submit the final bid documents.
