A senior gynaecologist Dr Chandrawati was accused of operating on a woman Devi Gupta around a month before her delivery date, following which the baby could not survive. On Thursday, the woman’s husband Abhishek Gupta lodged an FIR with the Hasanganj police against the gynaecologist and senior pediatrician Dr Ashutosh Verma.

Gupta, a resident of Sitapur, told the cops that Dr Chandrawati of Krishna Medical Centre was treating his wife and her delivery date was around August 16. He said his wife did not have any complications during the pregnancy and without any genuine reason, Dr Chandrawati operated on her on Wednesday.

He said the caesarian was done as the doctor wanted to go abroad next month and would not have been available. He said the child’s health deteriorated soon after the operation. Dr Chandrawati recommended admitting the baby to Children’s Medical Nursery hospital of Dr Ashutosh Verma in Daliganj.

“We had no option but to follow the doctor’s direction,” said Gupta, adding the child died in Dr Verma’s hospital after being admitted there for a few hours. He accused the two doctors of being responsible for the child’s death. He even accused the doctors of changing the child, which was a boy, with a girl child.

Dr Chandrawati, however, refuted the charges of negligence. She said the child’s growth was poor since the very beginning, following which operation was done otherwise it would have been risky for the mother’s life. She said the child’s condition was not good since birth. Its sexual organs were not fully developed, so it was difficult to differentiate the sex.

Dinesh Singh, in-charge of Hasanganj police station, said the FIR had been lodged under IPC section 315 for act done with intent to prevent child being born alive or to cause it to die after birth and section 506 for criminal intimidation. He said probe was on.
