Juveniles are not mature adults, show them a bit more leniency

This is with reference to the news report SC wants govt to revisit juvenile law (July 15). The Supreme Court is questioning the immunity enjoyed by all juvenile delinquents guilty of heinous crimes such as rape and murder. The court is looking to change such laws that do not adequately punish the delinquents according to the crime committed by them. However, a new law, punishing juvenile delinquents in cases of rapes, at par with adult convicts, may stand in contravention of international practices. Therefore, a more lenient approach needs to be taken concerning juvenile delinquents. Offences of rape must be punished severely, but with some difference when committed by juveniles.
