UP MAY HAVE A WOMAN DGP TOO
LUCKNOW: Chief minister Akhilesh Yadav is planning to create a new post of woman director general of police (DGP) to specifically deal with crime against women. The move comes following the rise in incidents of crime against women and the most recent brutal sexual assault and killing of a woman in Mohanlalganj here. Sources said the issue was discussed at a meeting convened by the chief minister on Friday.
Meanwhile, Yadav set up a committee for crime against women. It would comprise chief secretary, DGP, principal secretary (Home) and a senior woman police officer. The CM also asked chief secretary Alok Ranjan to monitor the Mohanlaganj case. Ranjan later held two meetings — with DGP AL Banerjee, principal secretary (Home) Rakesh Bahadur and DG (investigations) — to assess the progress in the case.
Late in the night, a series of tweets from the CM’s office confirmed what the sources had indicated. The high-level women’s empowerment and safety committee, headed by the chief secretary, would also have principal secretaries of law, panchayati raj, health, education, and women and child welfare departments. The chief minister has also asked the chief secretary to include prominent academicians in the committee. Soon there would be brainstorming on the issue by the committee comprising eminent psychologists, sociologists, legal luminaries and academicians, as well.
