OPPN FLAYS GOVT OVER RISING CRIME AGAINST WOMEN

-

LUCKNOW: The opposition parties on Friday flayed the state government for the rising crime against women in Uttar Pradesh. Referring to the heinous rape and murder of a woman in Mohanlalganj on Thursday, the opposition said while there was spurt in all types of crimes, cases against women particularly had gone up sharply.

A delegation of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLAs met chief minister Akhilesh Yadav on Friday and drew his attention to the brutal case. Talking to media persons, BJP state president Laxmikant Bajpai said the chief minister had assured the delegation that there would be a breakthrough in the case soon.

Senior Bahujan Samaj party (BSP) leader RK Chaudhury, who visited the spot, also condemned the government for failing to control crime. Pointing out that the Mohanlalganj incident was the worst of its kind, Chaudhury said the case pointed to police slackness and that rampant corruption in the police department had affected its functioning. Chaudhury also apprised BSP chief Mayawati about the incident.

However, urban development minister Mohd Azam Khan while expressing concern over the murder of the woman, said efforts were being made to nab the killers and they would be given exemplary punishment.

The Congress also handed over a memorandum to Governor Aziz Qureshi about the increasing crime against women. The party said the police administration had failed to control the crimes.

State secretary of CPI (ML) Ramji Rai also condemned the police for the heinous crime, saying that law and order had completely derailed in the state. The party also organised a dharna to protest against the crime.
