Israel intensified air and ground offensives in Gaza Saturday, taking the death toll to 341 as the 12-day operation showed no signs of letting up.
The conflict also hit close to home with police opening fire on protesters in Kashmir demonstrating against the Israeli strikes, killing a teenager.
Israeli army said it was “expanding the ground phase of the operation” to destroy Hamas’s network of tunnels, used for cross-border attacks on southern Israel.
With violence escalating, United Nation secretary general Ban Ki-moon headed to the region to join truce efforts while the United States urged Israel to limit the high civilian death toll. More than 50,000 Gazans have fled their homes since Operation Protective Edge was started by Israel to stamp out rocket fire from Hamas militants in Gaza, said the UN.
Meanwhile in Kashmir, a demonstration against Israel turned violent after the police used batons on protestors in Kulgam, south Kashmir. Security forces subsequently used tear-gas shells and shot at the crowd, killing one and injuring two people. The incident was widely condemned with separatists calling for a shutdown.
