VARANASI: Senior Samajwadi Party leader and urban development minister Azam Khan on Sunday accused the union government of hatching a conspiracy to topple the Samajawadi Party government in the state.

The minister was in Varanasi on Sunday to inaugurate several projects.

“The BJP-led NDA government wants to topple the democratically elected Samajwadi Party government in Uttar Pradesh,” Azam Khan told reporters here.

Khan also accused the BJP government of not extending any help to the state government. “The BJP government is not cooperating with the state government,” he said.

Khan also appeared a touch sentimental on the issue of Muslims in India being portrayed as Pakistanis by some.

“Even after so many years of Independence, Muslims have to prove their loyalty towards India. Where can we go now?” Khan said. “If we go to Pakistan, then will it accept us?” he asked.

For those who have questioned Khan’s honesty, the minister said: “I have only one bank account and that is for my Vidhan Sabha salary. I have no other bank account till date.”
