‘Core strengths have to be tapped to improve our competitiveness’
NEW DELHI: Water and Power Consultancy Services (WAPCOS) is a premier public sector organisation under the ministry of water resources. The company has been strengthening its technical skills for preparation of project reports and engineering designs. In an interview with HT, RK Gupta, chairman and managing director of WAPCOS, said that with its pool of engineers and scientists, the company will soon make impressive revenue generation, up from a moderate growth over the years. Excerpts: What is the biggest challenge for the company? There is urgent need of complete re-engineering of our business strategies and human resource planning to take the company to new heights. Our core strengths have to be tapped to improve our cost competitiveness and quality to ensure the trust of our clients. How has the company fared abroad? The company’s presence has grown. From eight countries earlier, we are now present in 38 countries in Africa, the Middle East and Asia along with all states in India. We also plan to procure business in Latin America and CIS countries in the near future. What is the distinct advantage of engaging with WAPCOS? Our clients can count on our competencies to tackle interrelated tasks. We provide a unique blend of direct and frontline experience with latest state-of-the-art technological skills. We always ensure reasonableness of costs. The sheer scale, type, number of the projects handled and their overall impact is what separates us from others. The willingness to go an extra mile to meet the challenges for our clients is firmly entrenched in our thought process. What have been your financial achievements? In 2009, our turnover was ` 200 crore. We became a ` 500 crore plus company by 2013, and this year we have registered a gross income of ` 920 crore. What is your vision for WAPCOS? How do you plan to achieve it? At one level, our vision is to be a premier consultancy organisation recognised as a brand for meeting society’s needs globally. But at another level we have a philosophical sense of purpose that goes beyond the commercial achievements. We are committed to work so that we can align our company and make it an organisation admired by all. We also understand our role in furthering bilateral efforts of the government of India with other nations. With the recent successes, I am confident that we will make the company achieve new milestones very soon.
