India’s first stamp to be displayed at exhibition
India got independence on August 15, 1947. But it wasn’t before November 21, 1948 that the first Indian stamp was released here. It was a tricolour. This first Indian stamp along with several other rare collections would be put on display at the State Archives building (Rajkiya Abhilekhagar), Mahanagar from September 30 to October 2.
A part of AHIMSAPEX-2014, t he stamps exhibition on Mahatma Gandhi and other freedom fighters is being organised by the Lucknow Philatelic Society in association with India Post and would display some rare collections by philatelists across the country.
SAM Zaidi, founder of the Lucknow Philatelic Society said, “This would be the first time when Lucknow would get to see stamp collections from philatelists across the country. Collections from about 25 states

would be displayed here.”
A set of four stamps on Mahatama Gandhi with other change makers of the world and a special cover with Mother Teresa, Vallabhbhai Patel and Gautam Buddha would also be released on the occasion.
Addressing a press conference on Monday, Zaidi said a number of events including a workshop on philately, quizzes, games and other activities would be hosted for students. “The idea is to introduce this hobby among children. Since exchange of snail mails etc is not a trend anymore, children need to be introduced to such hobbies that are not just fun but also an investment.”
Opening at 11 am on Tuesday, the exhibition would close at 4pm on October 2.
