India’s largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki Tuesday said it was recalling 69,555 of its popular diesel vehicles for a potential wiring fault, the second such recall by the company in less than a year.

NEW DELHI: India’s largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki Tuesday said it was recalling 69,555 of its popular diesel vehicles for a potential wiring fault, the second such recall by the company in less than a year.

Maruti, majority-owned by Japan’s Suzuki Motor Corp, said 55,938 older units of compact sedan DZire, 12,486 of Swift and 1,131 of Ritz manufactured between March 8, 2010 and August 11, 2013 were being called back to inspect and fix possible issues with the routing of the wiring harness that connects the battery to the engine.

“Maruti Suzuki dealers will contact owners of all the affected vehicles. The dealer workshop technicians will inspect the wiring harness fitment condition and carry out the necessary repairs, free of cost,” the company said. No other models would be affected by the recall.

Earlier in April, the company, which nearly makes half of the cars sold in India, recalled 103,311 units of Ertiga, Swift and DZire to fix faulty fuel-filler neck.

India does not have a recall policy but after the introduction of a voluntary code in 2012 by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers, more than 700,000 vehicles have been recalled.

In the new motor vehicles act, the government proposes to penalise companies for delay or reluctance in recalling cars. The act is expected to be passed during the winter session of Parliament later this year.
