Cops catch youth who robbed car, tried to kill driver
LUCKNOW: A 19-year-old boy, who had fled with a hired car after sedating and trying to kill the driver on September 21, was finally caught by the city police in Gomti Nagar on Wednesday.
The son of a Kanpur-based businessman had told his family that he had been recruited as an officer in the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and even managed to hood-waink the travel agency from which he had hired the car. Police finally found him using electronic surveillance.
Aman Katiyar, the son of a brick kiln and construction material business owner Arun Katiyar is a resident of Bithoor in Kanpur. However, he had been staying at a rented accommodation in Gomti Nagar, Lucknow, after lying to his family about an IB job.
Surveillance cell in-charge Akshay Kumar said the teen committed the crime to maintain a lavish lifestyle and his impression before his family. He booked the car from the travel agency posing as an IB officer on September 19 and kept it with him for two days. He went to Agra and Kanpur and there offered the driver, Deenanath, a sedated cold

drink on September 21. Katiyar then drove the car along the jungle area on Kanpur outskirts and tried to strangle the driver with a rope. He left the driver in the jungle area believing him to be dead, and had been driving around freely since then, the cop added.
However the driver managed to survive, as the rope was not tight enough to kill him. After regaining consciousness on September 22, he told the travel agency owner about the whole incident.
Kumar said the driver and the agency owner had been crisscrossing the route between Kanpur and Lucknow to get an FIR lodged in the matter, but nobody paid heed to their complaint.
An FIR for robbery and attempt to murder was finally lodged in Gomti Nagar after senior officials learnt about the incident on Tuesday and the teen was arrested along with the stolen car.
